ABSTRACT

One of the most chilling presentations of the case for impending doom is the report prepared by the Club of Rome and published as The Limits to Growth. This report attempts to project the future availability of energy resources and the other basic resources needed to maintain an industrial society. Nuclear power plants raise the level of background radiation and pose the threat of accidents that could release massive quantities of radioactive material into the environment. They also produce extremely toxic wastes which must be isolated from the biosphere for hundreds, thousands, perhaps even millions of years. Modern science and technology have given the ability to understand ourselves and our environment and to control our destiny to an extent unprecedented in human history. They have also created enormous problems. Many people think that our technology has run out of control and that these problems have reached crisis proportions.
