ABSTRACT

As a consequence of increasing interdisciplinary communication among psychiatry, psychology, sociology and anthropology, there has been a growing awareness in recent years of their complex interrelatedness and interdependence. Psychiatrists and clinical psychologists have begun to realize that no awareness of individual psychodynamics truly can be complete without an understanding of the complex interpenetration of individual personality development with family structure, community organization and cultural mores. The significant fact about the contemporary American community is that its specific influence on family life has been diminishing steadily over the past several decades. The dependency of today’s child upon his parents is further accentuated by the actual physical aspects of modern community life.
