ABSTRACT

Roseto is located in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, once a portion of Bucks County, which, along with Philadelphia and Chester counties, were the three original counties established by William Penn in 1682. Bucks County had extended north to the New York colony, west to the Susquehanna River, and east to the Delaware River. They settled in a rough terrain where the road rises sharply at the northern edge of the Bangor business district along Martins Creek. The present town covers a land area of one-half square mile. Narrow cement streets, many bearing Italian names, are now pretty well covered with asphalt. Most young Rosetan couples lived with parents or other family members, and more than half of the single, widowed, or divorced persons lived with family members. Infants were breast-fed by their mothers but were mothered by many females in the family including older sisters, aunts, grandmothers, and even cousins.
