ABSTRACT

This chapter will challenge readers to consider evolving notions of space, materials, and learning environments in a digital age, where learning takes place everywhere. Home and community learning environments extend learning beyond the school setting allowing students to gain knowledge, skills, and practice towards mastery of new literacy skills. Classroom space, classroom materials, and transforming pedagogies create new learning environments for students to express agency, as technological advances continue to transform literacy instruction. The transformation in learning environments ranges from makerspaces, Google classrooms, virtual reality, 1:1 initiatives, and problem-based learning as technology continues to advance. Classroom materials help build literacy-rich learning environments supporting lesson design and learner variabilities. Digital and analogue tools available and accessible to all learners increase the possibility of transformational practices and personalized learning in classroom environments. An important consideration for learning environments need to be adherence to Universal Design for Learning principles to help teachers focus on all student’s needs. As learning environments continue to expand from brick and mortar classrooms to flipped classrooms, student-centered approaches and opportunities for student agency will continue and build a foundation for lifelong learning.
