ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter introduces the major concepts, tools and ideas used for the purpose of this book. It presents the context and defines the scope of the research this book builds upon. It explains the objectives and original contribution of the book. Also, it outlines the methodological framework used to undertake the collection of data. In order to present the theoretical position of the book, the chapter overviews the current knowledge on precarious work. By doing this, it discusses the overarching theoretical framework and examines the philosophical foundations and theoretical perspectives which conceptualise precarious work for migrant workers. Thus it sets the scope to examine employment relationships with reference to migrant labour in Bangladesh’s construction sector. The chapter begins with a review of contemporary changes in global workplaces to define the scope of precarious work. After that, it presents an overview of the recruitment practices and employment relationships in the global construction industry and their specific relevance to Bangladesh’s construction sector. The chapter concludes by presenting the roadmap of the book.
