ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses decisions related to the building of sporting venues and their management once opened. It explores the landscape of new venue building and venue management and the importance of decisions being guided by key business concepts. The chapter moves to the financing of new venues. Then the chapter examines new venue design and planning including a discussion about the multiple choices that impact decision-making after the venue is opened. Building these different stakeholders into a workable well-functioning coalition requires much management and people skills. Multiple new venue projects have had either sizable cost overruns, time overruns or both, often finishing way over budget in cost or opening years later than planned.
