ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines crisis management and the processes that sports administrators and stakeholders can take to identify, prevent, prepare for, react, recover, and learn and adapt from crises as they occur within their respective areas. A crisis is an event or series of events that threaten important expectations of stakeholders and can seriously impact an organization’s performance and generate negative outcomes. Crisis management in the sporting context is the process that managers take when dealing with a crisis that takes place within their federation, league, team, event or venue. Crises can be on-field or off-field. Crises in sports are often enhanced due to mass media attention and the injury risks inherent in many sports. Sports managers are facing constant threats to the well-being of their sports that need carefully crafted responses. Off-field crises are more diverse because of the broader set of stakeholders involved.
