ABSTRACT

People mainly migrate to Delhi for economic opportunities. Being the capital of India, Delhi generates enormous job opportunities for both skilled and unskilled workers. On the flip side, the residents live in unhealthy conditions and tremendous stress. The health issues in the cities are of a varied nature. Managing diseases and other health issues become very expensive and a situation of a trade-off emerges between the healthcare cost and economic gains of staying in the city. Delhi faces the challenges of rapid growth of population on the one hand and inadequate growth of public health facilities on the other hand. It has witnessed one of the highest private sector participation in the health sector among the world’s megacities. This chapter throws light on healthcare management in India, with special reference to Delhi. The chapter discusses healthcare providers, investment and out-of-pocket expenditure. It also explores health financing schemes and health insurance in India in brief. It then examines healthcare and out-of-pocket expenditure by the residents of Delhi, analysed through a primary survey.
