ABSTRACT

Cities are becoming increasingly congested and polluted. The unsustainable development model of cities like Delhi has been linked to the haphazard growth structures and pollution chaos. Pollution mitigation and management in such cities has become a big challenge. Developmental activities per se cannot be stopped, but planning the green infrastructure has become inevitable for making cities resilient. The responsibility has to be shared by the government, judiciary and people of the city. All policies framed by the government, whether economic or social, have to be extremely eco-sensitive and eco-friendly. Since Delhi’s pollution levels have risen to the worst possible limits, it is high time for all stakeholders to take all possible measures in a focused manner. It is important to integrate green infrastructure with urban design. The solutions can be worked out by creating green spaces in an innovative way, making suitable policy changes and focusing on promoting health insurance. There cannot be a single policy to solve the problem of air pollution; we need to focus on multiple long- and short-term policies. Beside policy changes, we need to involve technological innovations for both curbing air pollution and increasing and enriching the green spaces in and around Delhi. This chapter tries to summarise the good practices followed in India and other countries. It also highlights and recommends the possibilities to work upon.
