ABSTRACT
The effacement of janana experience in research and the resulting lacunae in understandings of language, gender, and sexuality result in part from a misunderstanding/confusion about the relationship between hijras and jananas. This chapter bridges the gap between research on hijras and research on jananas. It presents the relationship as it is understood by jananas since their perspectives have been largely missing from scholarly and popular descriptions of this relationship.
