ABSTRACT

The janana community of practice is unique because of the context of their marginalization and in how their discourse/language use reveals this marginalization. Within third-wave variationist sociolinguistics, the community of practice framework provides fundamentally important ways of discussing the connections between local and global forces that guide day-to-day practice. While looking at connections between local and global forces, this chapter intervenes in sociolinguistic studies that use ethnography as a method but do not engage with how the method interacts with the production and presentation of the emerging subject. Understanding jananas as a CofP is vital to understanding the life world of jananas.
