ABSTRACT
In Chapter 1, we establish the overall terrain of the book and give an abbreviated account of the core concept (camera consciousness) and its key thematic concerns (the social impacts of machine vision, the importance of visual literacies). As we explain in this chapter, camera consciousness involves both an awareness of cameras and a self-conscious reaction to their power to make visible, to reveal, capture and hold their target and to fix it for scrutiny, judgment and action.
