ABSTRACT

This chapter explores changes within, and how and if we might see a movement towards welfare states, taking all things into consideration, coming to look still more alike. It presents the role of the European Union (EU) in relation to welfare states in Europe, as there has been growing influence from the EU on the way and understanding of what can be decided nationally. The chapter explores the supranational impact on welfare states and possible implications. It focuses on information and possible influence from international organisations such as International Labour Organization, United Nations and Organisation for Economic Co-operation. The more direct way is the EU agreeing on a directive in relation to welfare issues. A number of international organisations have an influence, at least as agenda setter, and the provision of ideas and knowledge is important with regard to social policy and welfare state development.
