ABSTRACT

This chapter contains the description of the IMP items assessed in the sitting position. Sitting on the floor or on a mattress on the floor is evaluated in all infants; assessment in this position cannot be skipped. In young infants, sitting implies supported sitting; in older infants, independent sitting is evaluated. Putting infants who cannot sit independently into a supported sitting position has no negative impact on the infant’s development. Rather, evidence indicates that putting infants who cannot sit independently in a supported sitting position to challenge their postural skills is associated with a favourable effect on motor development.
