ABSTRACT

Initially, the therapist explains how therapy works so that the client can understand both his role and that of the therapist (and others in the group, if it is a group experience). Maintaining the framework may also involve such techniques as analyzing what is happening within the therapy, interrupting or redirecting discussion, terminating therapy, and the like. From the very first moment of contact between the therapist and client, the goal, of course, is a successful outcome. The therapist highlights with the client what it is that the client wants help with through therapy. Throughout the therapy process, the client and therapist should reexamine the problem or issue, as it may change or morph into something new. The therapist usually states in a clear question, comment, or statement what she thinks the client would like, or asks them what they want.
