ABSTRACT
Shows the deep fascination of natural history as an amateur pastime in England over the last three centuries. Geological fieldwork became popular in the early nineteenth century partly because of the Romantic appeal of antiquity and of the new palaeontology. Amateurs made major contributions to the science.
