ABSTRACT

This chapter lays out some of the most salient issues of communication ethics in modern, complex organizations. We will begin with a brief overview of organizational communication as a field of study. This overview previews the fundamental areas of ethical concern in considering the range of organizational communication and a general framework for analyzing such communication. In their communication, organizations are accountable to their stakeholders, communities, and societies in which they are located. They are further accountable to their members in regard to diversity and inclusiveness, members’ health and safety, privacy and other rights, financial security. The chapter also takes up issues of whistle-blowing as well as matters dealing with workplace democracy and quality of life. The chapter concludes with the consideration of vantage points for dealing with ethical issues in organizational communication.
