ABSTRACT

While feminism is concerned with sex work in connection with the question of whether it is done voluntarily or against one's will, experiences of women involved with in it are more diverse, which makes it difficult to understand coercion and volition as a mutually exclusive category. This chapter shows that while most women are coerced and deceived into sex work there are cases in which women willingly choose to engage themselves in sex work for reasons influenced by structural conditions. It also documents sex worker's diverse experiences in bonded and tenancy mode, arguing that sex workers experiences are fluid and comprise of a continuum of experiences. This chapter emphasizes the need to identify an “in-between” space in the spectrum of agency and victimhood.
