ABSTRACT

This chapter sums up the problems associated with market-oriented education finance (MOEF) policy: the marketization and privatization of education, the managerialization of educational leadership, inequities in education finance between school districts, and inequities in student access to educational opportunities. The authors suggest that the way forward within the context of neoliberalized public education involves educational leadership that demonstrates “politico-ethical” agency, including critical reflection and social reconstruction of what it means to comply with the institutional rules of MOEF. Moving forward also necessitates a conception of education that transcends the liberal, individualistic focus on the “educated person” and/or the “public good” and, instead, emphasizes both individual and community well-being and the broader global common good.
