ABSTRACT
Chapter Five revisits to the Manchu era (1691-1911) to counter the common misunderstanding that Mongolia’s traditional nomadic lifestyle was destroyed during the Soviet period by the socialist regime and its modernization schemes. The chapter demonstrates that the Manchu colonial regime displaced or otherwise constrained Mongolians in their ability to move around freely long before the socialist regime gained power in Mongolia.
