ABSTRACT

Chapter Six discusses how seven decades of Soviet-backed socialist governance further altered Mongolian society, and dramatically so. In the Soviet shadow, the Mongolian state instituted high-modernist policies to modernize and industrialize society. The process of implementing these changes fundamentally changed Mongolia’s social fabric, moving Mongolia yet further away from its mythic nomadic state. Mongolian society was radically reshaped in the Soviet shadow, creating a reality that belies notions of an enduring Mongolian nomadic identity that nevertheless drives current political discourse regarding the future of Mongolia.
