ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 discusses the transportation challenges of Addis Ababa. Although the transportation-related challenges are enormous, the chapter will focus on the “old” vehicles that control the city’s roads. Those vehicles not only exacerbate the poor air quality, but also endanger passengers and pedestrians, creating a public health risk to the city. A significant portion of the taxi fleet in Addis Ababa is more than 30 years old. This chapter makes a strong argument that, if Addis Ababa cares about the quality of life of its residents, there is a need to put an end to these old cars. The chapter discusses good practices in other countries that can be adapted and implemented in the city of Addis Ababa to replace the aged vehicles. The chapter will also discuss other transportation issues such as quality of infrastructure and residents’ perspectives about the day-to-day transportation challenges.
