ABSTRACT

During 1974 three important world conferences on population, energy, and food took place which realistically considered the changes needed to ensure the optimum use of the world’s resources to meet future demands. An important aspect of the global food supply situation is the role of the meteorological community in supplying information which may or may not affect the market. An important consideration of the mix of weather and economics is the ability to use weather/climate information to adjust or modify economic indicators on the basis of their sensitivity to weather and climate. Extreme weather events - hurricanes, tornadoes, lightning, floods, droughts, and hail - often result in catastrophic losses of property and income, and in loss of life. Some countries believe that they will be ‘winners’ and some believe they will be ‘losers’ with a problem not of their own making. The main long-term effect of reduced ozone amounts is an increase in ultraviolet radiation near the earth’s surface.
