ABSTRACT

Originally established as a protest to the perceived failure of commercial news outlets, the launch of many nonprofit newsrooms, including the university nonprofits of this study, can be seen as the awakening of a protest movement. While the first part of this chapter presents the most central research on nonprofit news and university nonprofits, the second part introduces the four centers of study (the IRP Berkeley at UC Berkeley, the Stabile Center at Columbia University, the Workshop at American University, and the New England CIR at Boston University). Exploring their similarities and differences, leadership, size, teaching, production, media partnerships, funding, and main goal, the chapter finds that three of the centers prioritize production if having to choose between their dual roles, while the Stabile Center is the most pedagogically oriented center prioritizing teaching.
