ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a general description of the duties of a Clerk of Works. During pre-project preparations, the Clerk of Works might be expected to study the architect’s office procedures, study the contract drawings and schedules and the information produced by consultants and specialists, and other functions. The Clerk of Works has to be supplied various documents such as building contract, incorporating any supplements or amendments, contract bills of quantities (unpriced) and/or specification, and employer’s health and safety policy requirements and the approved Health and Safety Plan. The typical duties of a Clerk of Works includes examining work in the contractor’s, subcontractors’ and suppliers’ workshops as necessary, reporting according to the programme, submitting periodic reports as agreed, monitoring the application of specified techniques, and informing the architect of non-conforming work.
