ABSTRACT

The next generation of practitioners will need to be accustomed to using IT and harnessing the power of these technologies to provide reporting methodologies relating to quality control matters. The traditional duties of a Clerk of Works still apply – acting with ability, integrity and vigilance – but the way reporting is communicated, translated and transferred demands ever greater speed and efficiency. It is important to ensure that secondary back-up sources are used, such as cloud-based systems or USBs, ensuring that data is easily retrievable and password protected. The basics remain constant, and the attention to accuracy, coherence, legibility and factual recording of events is the top consideration. The Clerk of Works/site inspector must verify with the architect/contract administrator before issuing any direction – in particular, where the direction entails additional work, has financial implications, and alters any of the contract particulars.
