ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors consider how language is linked to culture and identity and how the one influences and moulds the other. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has also spawned numerous new words across languages and cultures, showing the importance of this virus in the people lives. When exploring the relationship between languages and cultures, the Whorfian hypothesis, or the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, is highly relevant. The relationship between languages and cultures can also be explored through an analysis of comparative colour terminology. In the light of the examples given in the chapter, which show the link between languages and cultures, the question has been raised of whether speakers of different languages in fact perceive the world differently. In a multicultural society, it is not easy to become linguistically and culturally competent in all the languages with which one may come into contact.
