ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the historical geography of Jiangxi. The part of Jiangxi Province this book looks at consists of river basins surrounded by hills. The hills were developed before the basins. Particular noteworthy was mining, both of copper and silver. Some parts of the hills produced the region’s most noted militia. The plains were developed for agriculture only when the rivers were brought under control. The families that were engaged in water-control projects came to be the most notable ones that were interested in building lineages.
