ABSTRACT
This is the first of three chapters that describe the mechanics for building lineages. A fundamental part of lineage building had to do with names and how they might be linked. This chapter cites evidence that a numbering system was employed which changed as the size of the community the numbering covered increased. It argues that the lineage was founded on flexible practices such as this, and not, as is commonly stated, on the communal holding of properties.
