ABSTRACT

Recruitment is one of the most volatile and changeable activities that human resources professionals are involved in. It sometimes seems as if almost every architect’s practice has either too few or too many staff. This chapter examines the recruitment process into a series of manageable steps, and also provides some guidelines on the process of selection and rejection, and what needs to be done to help one's new recruit during the all-important induction period. A job description used for recruitment need not be an exhaustive detailed list of tasks. Instead, it should be a guide to main responsibilities, reporting lines and expected outcomes of the role. One of the most common complaints about recruitment is that the process seems to take so long. A snappy headline draws attention to the advertisement: ‘Architect sought’ versus ‘Highly innovative and quirky design studio seeks keen advocate of team working and flexible working practices, must be a registered architect’.
