ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses: What to recognise and how to do it, Leadership and promotion and Succession planning. Recognition differs from reward in that it can often be nontangible, such as public thanks or congratulations. Recognition can stretch from being named and thanked at a staff meeting or via a company-wide email which can be used for all staff, to promotion to partner or other level of management, which is clearly going to be limited to a smaller number of staff. Many books advise people that they need to pursue a path of self-promotion to ensure that their positive characteristics and strengths are known to the decision-makers. However, this implies limitations on the abilities of the decision-makers to conduct their own research and make their own observations. Succession planning became a buzz phrase in management speak several years ago, but it remains something of a mystery and many companies still ignore the issue until late in the day.
