ABSTRACT
Chapter 11 begins this exploration with SIW’s development processes viewed through the lens of transdisciplinary research practice and the challenges of co-creation, co-production, co-design, and co-implementation. While we did not use such a framework to set up SIW processes, it is a rich lens through which to view the project in hindsight. This chapter extends our preoccupation with process: how do we bring the arts into transdisciplinary collaborations without undermining the very qualities for which their help is being sought? Where Artists of the Floating World played it safe in this regard, effectively generating a ‘hands-off’ process once the commissioning themes were established, Sustainability in an Imaginary World risks a more complicated integration. Ultimately, as we see here, this fell short of sufficient self-awareness, failing to avoid the kind instrumentalization of art that has preoccupied much of our thinking.
