ABSTRACT

The final empirical chapter for the Artists of the Floating World project follows the most ambitious experimentation in the work of Italian-Canadian composer Giorgo Magnanensi. Here we find Magnanensi building off the commission document through his ‘post-aesthetic’ phase, trying to go beyond writing ‘beautiful music’ towards fostering collaborative interactions with his audience. In this, Magnanensi is seeking an even more enhanced social agency of arts practice. Given our abiding interest in the overall role of aesthetic merit within arts-based research, this chapter offers invaluable exploration of how an explicit dismissal of an aesthetic priority impacts the overall social agency of art.
