ABSTRACT

Chapter 18 looks at how to work toward a more sustainable world at a range of scales and with a diversity of people. First, it examines research on why resistance and denial occur, followed by a discussion of strategies to motivate sustainable behavior. Other sections look at techniques for making sustainability visible and the role of language, including greenwashing. The importance of broad and genuine participation and the importance of social equity are discussed. Examples are provided of worker-owned cooperatives. The chapter ends, not with pessimism or optimism, but with a call to a third path, action.
