ABSTRACT

While these differing ethical issues are challenging, solutions are possible that address all three types of rights. The magical win-win situation is hard to reach though, and more usually a compromise and acceptable level of trade-off is required. If there is give and take, with luck and patience, some mutually acceptable compromise can be reached but this requires skills not necessarily within the training of an ecologist. For instance, there is now excellent evidence that setting up a marine-protected area or a related conservation initiative such as a Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA) can increase net fishing catch in the region at the same time conserving other marine species, but reaching agreement on if and where such a reserve should be sited often takes a lot of discussion.
