ABSTRACT

In spite of the awful environmental damage they have great wealth and, relative to other communities therefore, more room for manoeuvre. Obviously there are many great issues which have to be decided as this highly developed community changes its way of life. The use of the coal is making possible the transformation to the next stage. In this sense it is a microcosm of ‘Industrial Revolution Man’ as a whole, for the world’s fossil fuel resources will be almost exhausted in a few more generations. Power is in the hands of the economic giants; in their interests, rather than in the interests of ordinary people, the main evolutionary decisions are made. As the pace of technological evolution and population growth have increased, instead of looking further ahead, man has on the whole shortened his vision, and in this lie the most dangerous seeds of catastrophe.
