ABSTRACT

In a circular economy, waste becomes a resource. Designers have to think about using reclaimed materials and how they can be salvaged at end-of-life, contractors have to be able to source materials and components that are comparable to new products, and demolition contractors have to become brokers who salvage and sell resources. This can only work if new, vibrant networks are set up to make links between different industries and create a flow of materials that keeps resources in circulation. Selling the materials in advance could incentivise the building owners to allow more time to deconstruct the building and ensure that the components are salvaged intact. There is an opportunity to salvage materials and components from other industries by creating networks and exchange forums that allow products to be brought to the attention of the relevant people. Superuse Studios has created a whole suite of web platforms to enable connections between material demands and supply.
