ABSTRACT

Computer-aided design replicates the ‘analogue’ processes applied to the drawing board. Building Information Modelling (BIM) is championing a more revolutionary process and moving design into the ‘digital’ age. The use of the BIM model as a briefing tool is also influenced by a number of other subjects that reinforce this approach and provide clues to how BIM will change design processes. Facilities management software interfaces are being developed that will require new briefing methods to ensure that the BIM model can be effectively used for the operation of a building and not just for its construction. In terms of BIM, agreement of the Schedules of Services, the Design Responsibility Matrix and Information Exchanges and preparation of the Project Execution Plan, including the Technology Strategy, as part of the process of assembling the project team are the most important tasks.
