ABSTRACT

This chapter considers strategic briefing issues and how the briefing process relates to the assembly of the project team. The Concept Design will be prepared in response to the contents of the Initial Project Brief. An important initial consideration is deciding who should prepare the project brief. Professional clients may have the in-house capability or may use external advisers to assist them in the process. Depending on the circumstances, and certainly on smaller projects, it makes sense for the brief to be prepared by the architect who is also appointed to develop the design proposals. The client will have to enter into a Building Contract with a contractor in order to construct the designed project. The RIBA Plan of Work 2013 envisages three stages of brief development with the Final Project Brief being agreed at the end of Stage 2 in parallel with the client’s agreement to the Concept Design.
