ABSTRACT

Though Ramananda Chatterjee and his journals functioned during the first half of the twentieth century, their contemporary relevance has not diminished but rather increased. The rise of right-wing nationalists all over the world is forcing a revisit on the question of nation and nationalism, a subject that was discussed in detail by Ramananda in his journals. The constitutional issue must also be refocused on and the ideas of the founders recalled so that a meaningful way forward can be found. The question of media independence, upheld strongly by Ramananda, has also assumed great relevance as the volumes of information flows have grown exponentially, as has his pioneering emphasis on the use of cutting-edge technology. Ramananda also provided clues on how to combine credibility and reliability with commercial viability as more and more media is looked upon as a purely profit-generating business. Above all, as in present times, Ramananda’s days were one of rapid change which required the innovative ideas that he provided.
