ABSTRACT

Parts of the UK already suffer from water stress – particularly in the south and east, where there is less water available per person than there is in many Mediterranean countries. The Great Ormond Street Hospital team noted the importance of behavioural change, and supported the preparation of a comprehensive water-resources strategy for the hospital as a whole, covering water efficiency and flooding, and the appointment of a “water champion”. Some of the teams pointed out that if water is scarce in future, there may be interruptions in supply. In common with a number of other teams WSP Built Ecology also considered rainwater harvesting, and because their site is very constrained they explored some ingenious options for providing a suitable amount of storage. The British Trimmings team went further, suggesting that inter-seasonal rainwater storage could become increasingly attractive where space was available.
