ABSTRACT

Ethics represent a system of moral values and principles that affect how people make decisions and lead their lives. The RIBA's Ethics and Sustainable Development Commission Final Report in 2018 recommended that post-occupancy evaluation should be mandatory for RIBA-registered practices within two years, and that associated research methods should be taught on RIBA-validated programmes. Recruiting inhabitants to a BPE study by providing proportionate payments or small tokens for participation, depending on their level of involvement, is ethical. A BPE study funded separately by a government agency, research organisation or charity, which supports the client commissioning the work, will have separate agreements relating to organisational data sharing, reporting and dissemination. The researchers visited individuals in their homes every ten weeks over a year, as well as meeting the whole community several times to discuss the set-up and findings of the study as it developed.
