ABSTRACT

The art and science of creating effective feedback loops within BPE practice depends on an agile combination of tacit knowledge, good negotiation skills and the ability to recognise when there is a need to call on the help of others. This chapter discusses what is needed at each stage of a project to embed BPE methods within a co-designed feedback and learning process to enhance the practice of both the client and the design team. The useful six-step cyclical model developed by Wolfgang Preiser and Ulrich Schramm provides BPE with a strategic framework and systemic process for the complete life cycle of a housing project and into the next one. Factor a contingency element into the BPE project, in terms of time and costs, to allow for any unforeseen events such as equipment failure, lack of access to homes or data loss. The BPE team should develop a dissemination strategy as part of their initial proposal.
