ABSTRACT

Socio-technical studies also examine the broader societal aspects shaping the interactions that go on in the home. The term 'socio-cultural' is used to highlight the interrelationship between social and cultural aspects in housing BPE as they impact on evaluations of the home environment and its technology. Sociocultural theories related to BPE question the value systems in order to define what inhabitants' comfort needs actually are. Understanding how inhabitants perceive their home environment is critical for housing BPE. Several socio-cultural approaches are used in housing BPE studies to develop the understanding further in terms of 'how' and 'why'. Behaviour and BPE studies often ignore the meanings, habits and choices of individuals and groups as they are shaped by cultural beliefs and the societal forces that create and define housing needs. Emotions are rarely discussed in housing BPE studies, and yet they can have a very powerful influence in terms of how an inhabitant is motivated to engage with their home.
