ABSTRACT

This chapter describes an approach for using housing feedback methods believed to be most useful, with more information in the primer at the end of the book. The requirements of legislation alongside the needs of inhabitants define key housing performance criteria and standards for BPE. There are numerous gaps in housing performance legislation related to indoor air quality, lighting quality, water consumption, usability, ventilation and heating system feedback for the inhabitant. Basic feedback from a housing project can yield a significant amount of insight, when carried out by the design team. The documentation related to a housing project embodies and preserves the thinking and actions of the project over time. Observation of construction and housing fabric via walkthrough, noting anything unusual compared to the construction strategy audit. Surveys and interviews gather information on what inhabitants know about their homes, which is often far more than the designers or housing managers know.
