ABSTRACT

The “completion” of a PhD degree consists of several stages that can be spread out over several months in time, such as submission of student's thesis, PhD defence, submission of student's corrections, binding student's thesis, graduation, and receiving the diploma at a ceremony or via post. Celebrate student's thesis submission by going out with friends for a meal or drinks so that student can finally relax and mark the end of a long, intense and stressful time. In the United Kingdom (UK), it is customary to have a little celebration right after the defence: there would normally be an email from a colleague or supervisor inviting everyone in the group to celebrate the new Doctor in a common area at the department. In the Netherlands, the time from submission to defence is a continuum of meetings with committee members, making changes and showing them the new version of the thesis, arranging printing, and organizing the defence.
