ABSTRACT

Healthcare design can ignite creative passions in any architect who has had the misfortune to spend time in a hospital. However, it is not an easy area to get involved in. The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment was involved in devising ways of assessing healthcare design, working alongside the Prince’s Foundation and now the Design Council, still offers some guidance from time to time. Improvements in healthcare design require interdisciplinary research and work. But the biggest issue is the lack of new work for healthcare architects, because the work itself also provides material for further research and advancement of design. A new postgraduate course on healthcare facilities is being offered at the Bartlett from 2019 ‘for healthcare and built environment professionals to learn about the challenges facing healthcare real estate provision and operation in the 21st century’.
