ABSTRACT

Procurement is a critical activity in securing a successful outcome to the project. The form of procurement to be used is therefore a key consideration, and must be decided upon at the appropriate time. Procurement is not stage-specific, and the timing of procurement-related activities will depend on the procurement route chosen for the project. As actions and considerations are required in all stages, this section draws together information related to the specific considerations involved in selecting the contractor and key subcontractors and suppliers. There are four main forms of procurement: Traditional procurement, Design and build procurement, Management procurement, and Partnering, alliancing and integrated project insurance. There will often be the need to obtain tenders from specialist subcontractors or suppliers at an early stage. Tenders may be obtained by open tendering, selective tendering and negotiated tendering.
