ABSTRACT

Jimmy Carter was bareiy a blip on the national political horizon when, in September 1974, US News and World Report surveyed the 1976 Presidential scene. Jimmy Carter arrived in Wise Sanitorium on October 1, 1924, as President Calvin Coolidge was trying to rouse himself to stave off the challenge of John W. Davis. In the Carter household, action was not only permitted, it was required. By 1950, Carter had applied for assignment to the program that was developing the Navy's first atomic submarines. Carter's knack and training in engineering also affected his mind. Pope and Carter made a quick study of the election law. To take on Callaway, Carter had first to get the Democratic nomination. Against lots of wise advice, Jimmy Carter went on to run for governor once again, in 1970, and this time he won. The preceding prediction, written and published before Carter became President, turned out—as we should always expect—to be imperfect.
