ABSTRACT

Nothing is known of the early life of George Stack (fl. 1865–97), who is first recorded in association with the periodical Indian Daily News. This title was established by a syndicate of Calcutta merchants in 1864, with G. R. Fenwick as its first editor. Stack was Fenwick’s assistant, and became editor himself in 1865; he left the paper soon afterwards, however, as a consequence of the printing of some libellous articles (Basu, p. 181), and joined the Mofussilite. Around the same time he published a collection of Critical Essays (1866). He joined the Bengal education department in 1868, and spent the rest of his career teaching at various colleges, initially in Agra, Bareilly and Dacca, and moving to Patna College in January 1883. He became professor of literature at Presidency College, Calcutta in February 1888, and is credited with introducing the game of football to Calcutta during his time there (Majumdar and Bandyopadhyay, p. 13), before his retirement in April 1897. During 1885–8, he also edited the Calcutta Review.
